Coding is fun for Kids
Children learn best when they are
Interested, engaged and having fun! So, the matter is how to make coding fun? Is
it possible to make coding fun for kids? If so, how do we introduce coding in
an exciting way that will make kids want to code?
Just like any feeling, fun can have
different meaning to different people. So, if one child loves to play Cricket,
other child may prefer to play a Violin. While some child loves to write Poems,
another may find fun in writing stories. The key to developing a love of
problem solving, logic, number sense and digital literacy is to incorporate
these skills needed to code into activities your kids already love!
The educational needs of a child are
important and finding that balance between: making something educational and
making it fun at the same time is the real challenge. The most important thing
to consider when trying teaching coding in a fun way is to incorporate coding
into a child’s interest and using that interest to your advantage.
Coding
Activities is one such way that
teach coding skills to kids from preschool through elementary school in a fun
and engaging way. Here is a cool DIY Coding Activity that you can do with your
kids at home and develop their taste into desire to learn coding and take it up
as a career option in future:
DIY Coded Name Bracelet
Whenever
learning to write a new language, the first thing we are most interested in
learning is to write our name and we can do the same while learning Coding
ASCII code. We can write one's name using the number themselves or we can create
a cool key chain, Bracelet or Necklace.
Computer assigns a string of 0s and 1s to different letters, symbols, and instructions and these 0's & 1's are called Binary code. Give your child a list of all the letters of the alphabet, and then let them pick one color of bead to represent 1 (red) and another color to represent 0 (black). The blue beads represent spaces between the letters of her name. Below is the ASCII Binary Table which can be followed to write the name in binary first and then weave it into a beautiful bracelet using beads of the assigned color.
From
the table above: For the name NEHA...
N =
1001110, E = 1000101, H = 1001000, A = 1000001
Following
the sequence of the colored beads:
N =
red, black, black, red, red, red, black
E =
red, black, black, black, red, black, red
H =
red, black, black, red, black, black, black
A =
red, black, black, black, black, black, red
So, just by weaving the above color sequence beads on a string with a blue bead in between every letter of the name you can get a bracelet with Neha written on it. For larger names you can make a necklace.
Do this fun to do DIY activity at your home with your kid and it will automatically develop a keen interest in your kid to learn more of it.
